How Botox can help with migraines, excessive sweating and TMJ

A common misconception is that Botox is simply a cosmetic enhancer, used to treat fine lines and wrinkles on the face. However, as the only physician-supervised clinic in Fort Saskatchewan, LUXE Medical Spa and Laser goes beyond cosmetic uses for Botox, offering treatment for jaw tension and TMJ disorders, hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Our expertly-trained LUXE injector team, along with our physician supervisor Dr. Trevor Withers, can offer medical alternatives to treat these common issues through the use of targeted and strategic Botox injections.

What exactly is Botox?

Botox is the brand name given to a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum or botulinum toxin. Botox and Dysport are two brand names of this neurotoxin that our clinic uses to help freeze muscle movement, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and provide a medical alternative for clients who may be seeking relief from headaches, jaw disorders, excessive sweating, and other medical conditions. The neurotoxin that is in Botox is a neuromodulator secreted by bacteria that, when watered down with saline solution, can limit muscle contraction and movement by blocking the nerve transmission in nearby muscles. When injected correctly, Botox can effectively freeze the area to limit movements that contribute to fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox for headaches and migraines

If you suffer from chronic migraines or headaches, we encourage you to speak with your family doctor or book a consultation with Dr. Withers at the LUXE Medical Spa Clinic to see if Botox injections are the right treatment for your chronic condition. Botox was approved for adults who get chronic migraines, meaning you have both a history of migraine headaches and tension-type headaches on most days of the month. This treatment is not approved for individuals who get headaches fewer than 14 days each month or have other types of headaches, like cluster headaches.

Botox treatments for headaches involve a series of several injections of Botox around your head and neck every 12 weeks to help prevent migraine headaches or reduce the severity of your headache symptoms. Patients may receive up to 30 or 40 shots in total, with specific areas of the head and neck targeted, depending on where you experience your headache symptoms most often. Clients should see results 2 to 3 weeks after their first treatment, with many of our clients reporting a significant reduction in their number of headaches and the severity of their migraine symptoms. It is extremely important that this type of treatment is only delivered by a specially trained doctor to avoid potential negative side effects. At LUXE Medical Spa, we are proud to offer medically-supervised treatment to our patients.

Botox for jaw tension and TMJ

BOTOX for TMJ disorder is a non-surgical outpatient procedure that is performed right here at LUXE Medical Spa and Laser Clinic. One of our highly-trained injectors will inject your forehead, temple, and jaw muscles to help relax the jaw and address common symptoms of TMJ disorder, such as jaw tension headaches caused by teeth grinding and, in very severe cases, lockjaw. Patients can expect to feel a slight pinch at the injection site, with symptoms gradually relieving over several days as the body metabolizes the injection. Botox injections to address jaw tension and TMJ disorder require follow-ups to ensure a more permanent solution to chronic pain. Your treatment needs and the number of injections needed may vary, so it is best to speak to your health care provider and our LUXE Medical Spa and Laser team about what options might be best for you.

Botox for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, is a condition where problematic sweating impacts a person's overall quality of life. This condition generally affects areas like the scalp, underarms, hands, feet, and groin area. Or, it can be focal.  Botox injections are an incredibly effective treatment for focal hyperhidrosis whereby small, targeted areas of the body are injected with Botox to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating. The injections work to block the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. With these treatments, patients experienced a significant reduction in sweating. Typically, patients require treatments every four to six months, as the nerves regenerate; however, over time, patients often report being able to go longer between treatments.
